Monie Love Releases New EP “Love Notes” Prod. by Baby Paul Formerly of Da Beatminerz, First Project in 33 Years (EP Review)

Image
Monie Love  is a 55 year old MC, actress & radio host from London, England, United Kingdom making her full-length debut on Devil’s Night 1990 under Warner Records with  Down to Earth . Her sophomore effort  In a Word or 2  produced by Marley Marl & surprisingly the late Prince would leave fans divided over 3 decades ago although I personally like it more than  Down to Earth . Returning to music 10 days ago after appearing on  7xvethegenius ’ new album  Self 7xve 3 , the Native Tongues member looks to take her comeback to newer heights by dropping off a brand new EP of material. “Sho Luv” produced by  Baby Paul  formerly of  Da Beatminerz  bestows the new level that she’s elevated herself to after over 3 decades of being gone whereas “Cape Vinny” takes the soulful boom bap route instrumentally to talk about clarity settling in because of her thoughts getting crowded. “Jus We” featuring  Ru...

”Made by Dope” Prod. by Harry Fraud Takes Bruiser Wolf’s Unique Cadence to New Levels (Album Review)

Image
Detroit, Michigan emcee  Bruiser Wolf  releasing his 4th studio LP. A member of the Bruiser Brigade collective, his 2021 solo debut  Dope Game Stupid  would become an experimentally gangsta & comedic gem although the sophomore effort  My Story Got Stories  was more moderately received 21 months ago.  Potluck  quickly became his most celebrated work for good reasons & had higher expectations of  Made by Dope  due to  Harry Fraud  solely producing it himself. “Tubi” named after the Fox Corporation’s streaming service of the same name airing new episodes of the Endeavor-owned TKO Group Holdings division WWE’s new secondary developmental brand  EVOLVE every Wednesday night works in some soulful sampling to symbolize his diamonds of a rock & a hard place whereas the lead single “Raised by Dope” featuring  Benny the Butcher  talks about the dope fiends making them who they are today. W...

“Twice a Day w/ Food” Finds BVNGS Hungrier Than She Was on “Mary Mack” (EP Review)

Image
This is the 7th EP from New York City emcee BVNGS . Beginning over a decade ago off the strength of her debut EP Not Available followed up by 7 Dutches & a Sweet Tea , Brown Girls & Bubble Coats , Lula & Only Crying Because I’m Drunk . She later caught the attention of amongst the underground’s most prolific artists in recent memory Flee Lord , who briefly signed BVNGSY to Lord Mobb Music & put out her 6th EP LaQuisha in the spring of 2021. Only 4 months later, I had the privilege of meeting her at a Catch 1 show in Los Angeles that Flee was headlining & was impressed by her set. 16 months following her full-length debut Mary Mack , she’s enlisting DJ M80 to host Twice a Day w/ Food . After the intro, the first song “Herald” reminds everyone how she got her moniker over some pianos & 808s whereas “Missed Call” takes the boom bap route instrumentally talking about getting her roll on if you don’t answer her calls. “Big Dipper” takes a rap rock approach to the...

C-Lance Reunites with Novatore to Release “Embrace the Darkness III” (Album Review)

Image
Chicago, Illinois emcee Novatore celebrating Halloween early with his 14th studio LP. Emerging as a member of the Infamous Crew, he’s also built up an impressive solo career over nearly a decade by dropping 4 EPs & an acclaimed collaborative effort with A.M. Early Morning produced by Stu Bangas called Kingdom of Criminality & it’s recent sequel produced by Johnny Slash . Other highlights include  Louie ,  Louie II ,  Embrace the Darkness ,  Portrait of a Madman ,  Embrace the Darkness II: Explorers of Experience ,  Master of Morbid Creations  &  Living in the End Times ,  Alchemy & Black Magic , his Goon MuSick debut The 87 Arsonist & the Brenx -produced Agoraphobia . Only halfway through the month, he’s looking to outsource both of his previous discography entries under Goon MuSick with Embrace the Darkness III . After the “Possession” intro, the first song “Apostrophes” opens with a boom bap instrumental from non...

Mobb Deep’s 9th & Allegedly Final Album “Infinite” Recaptures Their Classic Sound (Album Review)

Image
Queens, New York duo  Mobb Deep  consisting of  Havoc  &  the late Prodigy  teaming up with Mass Appeal Records for their 9th & final album. Releasing their debut  Juvenile Hell  under Island Records to mixed reception,  The Infamous…  &  Hell on Earth through Loud Records & RCA Records would both become amongst the greatest east coast LPs ever.  Murda Muzik  distributed by Columbia Records would also be well received, but their final Loud offering  Infamy  as well as the Jive Records-backed  Amerika’z Nightmare  & of course  Blood Money  during a polarizing tenure on G-Unit Records/Interscope Records all left fans divided in the 2000s. Over a decade since  The Infamous…Mobb Deep  however, the 4th entry of Mass Appeal’s ongoing Legend Has It saga is now here preserving the Mobb’s  Infinite ...

X-Raided’s 3rd Strange Music LP Albeit 19th Overall “A Prophecy in Purgatory” is His Most Personal & Powerful (Album Review)

Image
Sacramento, California veteran  X-Raided  starting October with his 19th album. Exploding onto the scene in 1992 off the strength of his full-length debut  Psycho Active , he was shortly after sentenced to 31 years in prison on murder charges, only to be granted parole in the fall of 2018 & continued to build his discography by dropping a little over a dozen more albums whilst incarcerated. The Nefarious Loc surprisingly signed to  Strange Music  in 2022 & his debut for the label  A Prayer in Hell  was a true blue return to form, picking up where  A Sin in Heaven  left off for  A Prophecy in Purgatory . The title track works in some synthesizers from Matt Phoenix to talk about being barred from the pearly gates for committing a sin up there & after the “3 Days in Hades” skit, “Ecclesiastes” takes on a more orchestral vibe instrumentally calling for retaliation since God’s distracted. “Harrowing of Hell” talks about people ...

”Mino” Takes a Look At Elcamino’s Introspective Side (Album Review)

Image
Buffalo, New York emcee & singer  Elcamino celebrating his birthday last week to drop his 6th studio LP. Blowing up in 2017 off his self-titled EP with  Griselda Records , his profile increasingly grew after being followed up by  Walking on Water  mixtape in the summer of 2018 along with dropped 2 studio albums & a few EPs the year after that.  They Spit on Jesus  proved to be a well received  Black Soprano Family Records  debut becoming the first Camino project that I had covered since  On the 3rd Day  & that much like  No Weapon Formed Against Me  was an improvement over some of the material we’ve gotten from him in recent memory. 6 months after having  Real Bad Man  produce  The Game is the Game  followed by Ill Tone recently producing  Built for Cuban Links   named after  Raekwon ’s iconic solo debut  Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…  produced by  R...

Plain Pat Fully Produces LIFEOFTHOM’s Greatest Body of Work To Date “Driving Blind” (Mixtape Review)

Image
New York emcee  LIFEOFTHOM  enlisting seasoned talent manager, producer, DJ, songwriter, audio engineer & record executive  Plain Pat  to produce his debut mixtape. Introducing himself off his first couple EPs Thomas & Robot Jesus , he would go on to release 3 more in  Floor 11  as well as  Room 44  &  Cocotaso  respectively. However, the singles that we got teasing  Driving Blind  & learning that the former KIDS SEE GHOSTS manager was solely handling all of the production. “Wasted” was a passionate choice of an opener talking about risking it all for a plate & wanting a lot of stacks whereas the highlight “42nd St.” featuring  Lørd Skø  takes a jazzier yet soulful approach instrumentally representing the uptown. “Hands” featuring  Wiki  proves to be another favorite collaboration of the 4 working in more sampling stripping the drums to talk about being the boss type while “Overth...

La Reezy Pushes Himself to Greater Artistic Heights on His Self-Prod. 4th EP “Lareezyana Shakedown” (EP Review)

Image
New Orleans, Louisiana based emcee/producer  La Reezy  self-producing his 4th EP. Introducing himself in 2023 off the full-length studio debut  Reeborn , he would go on to follow it up with the debut EP  We All Need Help  as well as both  Welcome to La Reezyana  &  Pardon Me, I’m Different earlier this year. The latter 2 have been drawing a lot of eyes on him within these past several months, which ultimately resulted in  Lareezyana Shakedown unlocking a version of himself that even he didn’t know was ready to take the spotlight. “Nolia Clap” begins with a cross between drumless, chipmunk soul & rap rock talking about the rocket being ready to go off whereas “Hardheaded” takes a jazzier vibe instrumentally talking about how he should’ve listened to his parents & now he has to solve it himself. “Move” featuring Da1TopNoch is the only song I could do without here despite the beat stylistically throwing it back to the late 90s dirt...

”Hella Highwater” Diversifies a Confident Jehry Robinson’s Artistry Like No Other LP of His (Album Review)

Image
Long Island, New York rapper, singer/songwriter & producer Jehry Robinson returning got his 4th LP. Coming up almost a decade ago off his eponymous debut EP & the debut mixtape  Pts. IV-VI  few months later, his biggest breakthrough came around Christmas 2019 after signing to Strange Music & quickly establishing himself with the KC indie powerhouse by dropping his full-length debut  20/Twenty  the summer COVID had the world shutdown & a sophomore effort  The Name Is Not Important  the next fall. It’s already been a couple years since  Drink More Water  & is ending the month the way Strange started it with  Hella Highwater . Struggle Jennings joins Jehry on the heartfelt intro “Gates” telling the story of a family member who was recently released from a 12-year prison sentence whereas “Pour Up” featuring Doobie finds the 2 talking about smoking or drinking when they probably shouldn’t embracing a county rap sound. “G...

Lupe Fiasco Brings the Heat to Super Girl Series in Oceanside

Image
Lupe Fiasco – By Loe Kee Phlicks On Saturday, September 20, Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco headlined the stage in Oceanside, CA, as part of this year’s Super Girl Series — and he did not disappoint. With the Pacific Ocean just steps away and the crowd packed in tight along the sand, Lupe delivered an electric performance that reminded everyone why he’s considered one of the most lyrically gifted artists of his generation. Drawing from his critically acclaimed debut album Food & Liquor , Lupe ran through classics like “Kick, Push,” “Daydreamin’,” and “Superstar” — songs that had fans rapping along word-for-word. His set wasn’t just a nostalgia trip, though. He mixed in deeper cuts and fan favorites, showing love to longtime supporters, and even brought out a few tracks from his experimental rock side project, Japanese Cartoon. That unexpected switch-up added a unique twist to his set, showcasing the genre-bending creativity that’s defined his career. Lupe’s performa...

King Iso’s 7th Album “ghetto psycho” Gets to the Root of the Problem & Creates His Own Sound (Album Review)

Image
Omaha, Nebraska emcee/producer  King Iso  is back after 23 months for his 7th LP. Coming up as a protege of San Diego chopper  Twisted Insane , he would only drop first 2 albums  The Insanity Plea  &  Autophobia  under Brainsick Muzik. Shortly after, they had a falling out which was squashed not too long ago & it prompted Iso to put out his next album  DeMenTia  independently in 2018. However, I was thrilled to see him sign with Strange Music the following spring & his debut on the Kansas City powerhouse  World War Me  has quickly become one of the label’s best albums ever.  Get Well Soon  as well as  8 P.M. Med Call &  iLLdren  all went on to be equally well received, taking us on a trip through the mind of a  ghetto psycho . “Law 6126” starts with a dedication to the ghettos worldwide talking about having to prove to the state of Nebraska that Iso isn’t mentally insane over a self-...

Miz Korona’s 3rd EP “…I Forgive Me” Celebrates Her Birthday With Her Most Introspective Work (EP Review)

Image
Detroit, Michigan emcee/producer Miz Korona returning after 3 & a half years with her 3rd EP. Releasing her debut album  The Injection  in 2010 produced by Chanes, she would return a decade later dropping her first EP  The Virus  during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic followed by  The Healer & The Heartbreaker  approximately 24 months later. Coinciding with her born day however, she’s releasing  …I Forgive Me  on her Bandcamp almost entirely producing the whole thing by herself except for the halfway point. “Echoes of My Heart” featuring Neco Redd takes 3 & a half minutes to give everybody glimpses of their hearts real quick over a summery guitar instrumental whereas the title track asks God for self-forgiveness. “Space” takes the boom bap route stylistically feeling like she’s flying in a spaceship while “Last Goodbye” soulfully gets in her storytelling bag.  I felt threat “Melody of the Sun” was a highlight even for a single comi...

Daz Dillinger Seeks Clarity Regarding Death Row’s Past on “Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back 3” (Album Review)

Image
Long Beach, California rapper, producer & songwriter  Daz Dillinger  releasing his 22nd solo LP. Some of his cousins include Brandy & her brother Ray J, WWE Hall of Famer  Snoop Dogg  & the current AEW tbs Champion, CMLL Mundial Femenil Campeon and RPW British Women’s Champion Mercedes Moné. He eventually signed to Death Row Records & became an original in-house producer under the guidance of its co-founder  Dr. Dre , forming  Tha Dogg Pound  with  Kurupt  not too long afterwards. Daz finally made his solo debut on ‘98 by putting out  Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back  on Death Row until departing rather quickly to put out 20 more LPs of his own with almost 3 decades of experience in the game.  Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back 2 took it back to the essence of his debut earlier this summer & is looking to recapture that feeling once more. “It’s Automatic” starts with a hybrid ...
